Happy New Year 2009

As the old year dies, I hear Bing Crosby singing in my head, the New Year song from "Holiday Inn". I love that movie.
I have spent most of the day today trying to get a new web page built for ALCQ, that is easy enough for anyone to build, add to, edit, & it's FREE. I've also started a calendar on the blog side bar to help us keep track of what's going on. If you have something you want added. Please let me know either by commenting, calling or emailing me directly at akquilter1@acsalaska.net.
Happy New Year to all.

Today was the annual Christmas Potluck. This was a potholder exchange for those who wanted to participate.
Different groups decorated tables, & each table had goodies for those who sat there. We had to draw numbers then the table numbers were given out for each person to find their seats.
@ tables had Hawaiian themes. It was an icky summer this year, so I think we're all feeling it. In the back ground below you can see a table piled high with stuffed animals. Members took them home today to make quilts for them. In February we will have our Teddy Bear Tea, & bring them all back with quilts to be donated to local charities.
This table had 2 table runners that went to 2 lucky people at the end, besides the individual gifts.

There were also lots of prizes & great food. It was a lot of fun!

Quilt Demos

Today's day group meeting was several demos, by quilters who just got back from a national AQS show, & they were showing some of the things they learned. Mary Gerkin (above) & Jean Ferguson (below) talked about "Snippets" from a Cindy Walters class.
Betty Bivens had a "quickie" demo on a reverse applique' technique.
Jan Wills talked about an applique-piecing method involving freezer paper & templates.
Jackie Carley showed some Angelina Fiber techniques, as well as Shiva paint sticks, & other embellishment things like Crayons, rubber stamps, & water color crayons. Jackie has loads of ideas.
Mary Lee demonstrated Foiling on fabric.
The Next meeting is December 4th. It will be the Christmas potluck. Bring a dish to pass & a wrapped gift to add to the door prizes. There will be fun & laughter, & nice little gifts on the tables, besides drawings. Some nice Door prizes from some of the local shops. Wear your holiday dress & come have fun with us. Doors are open by 1030, we usually start eating by 11 a.m.
There is always Show & Tell.

Welcome to the Anchorage Log Cabin Quilters blog. The photo here is the past president Kay Fiaro holding up the quilt that the guild surprised here with. Blocks was made by members, & Ruthe Rasmussen pieced it all together, then Deb Hardman quilted it on her Longarm machine.
The ALCQ meets every 1st & 3rd Thursday of the month, at both 1030 a.m. & 7 p.m., at the Emanuel Lutheran Church on the corner of 15th & Cordova in Anchorage. If there happens to be a 5th Thursday in the month, we usually have a work bee that gets together to work on comfort quilts. We usually make about 200 comfort quilts each year to give away to needful people in our community.
We have a show each September, & we invite the community to come in free. We also sponsor famous quilters to come up & teach workshops, usually at least twice each year. They usually include a lecture which is free to the public.
On this blog I hope to keep up to date notices of the goings on in the guild, & links to member web pages.
