2020 Guild Challenge
The 2020 guild challenge will be the “3R challenge”.

A common mantra is: Reduce……..Reuse…….Recycle. In our eco-friendly world we are being constantly encouraged to do a better job of using what we have or reducing our footprint. Why not translate these messages into the quilting world? How does this fit into our quilting life?

Reduce ….This is about avoiding unnecessary purchases so there is less waste to deal with. Start by examining what you are using, and what it is used for. Ask yourself:

  • Do I already have something else that can be used for this purpose?
  • Is what I do or want to do with this item really necessary or is it only a whim?
  • Will the item help me be more productive? (There is a limit to what you can get done or need to do. Do you real-istically expect to complete the task? If not, you don’t need the tools to do it.)

Reuse….This is all about learning to reuse items, or re-purpose them – use an item in a way different than the original purpose. Work towards reusing an item instead of throwing it away...at the very least, put it on the “free” table at guild or donate it somewhere else. Practicing a new technique? Use your sample as the basis of a teddy bear quilt.

Recycle….This is about transforming items into something new: jackets from shirts/sweatshirts, quilts from shirts or dresses, an art quilt from rusty nails, putting scraps into a pet bed, etc.

The challenge for the year 2020 is to develop one or more quilted items that embody the concept of the 3 R’s: Re-duce...Reuse...Recycle. Here are the guidelines (there really are no “rules”.)

  • Size: No restriction
  • Type/technique: No restriction
  • Concept: demonstrate one or more quilting techniques in a quilted item made with the 3 R’s in mind - use up items already purchased (ie, work from your stash); revive an antique quilt using new fabric, use a “cutter” quilt to make other items, use quilting techniques to upgrade an item of clothing, recover a piece of furniture with quilting (we’ll accept photos of this work if necessary), etc. Embody the concept of reduce/reuse/recycle.

How do I do that? Maybe...

  • Reduce the amount of fabric used by making a smaller quilt when smaller will work,
  • Reuse/recycle an old quilt by cutting it up and using it as applique, or make usable parts into new, smaller quilts with better backing,
  • Make new quilted item out of “fabric” not originally intended for quilting,
  • Use small scraps to create “slab” or “crumb” quilts
  • Use batting scraps to create small quilts or quilted appliques or even dust with them
  • Use orphan blocks to make a finished item

Schedule:

Dates of challenge: January 2020 to August 2020.
Check-ins and prizes: Bring your finished or “in process” item in to the business        meetings in March, June and August for entries into the drawings. Is your item too big or cumbersome to carry to meetings? We’ll accept photos of the work in progress.

Completion date: Final date for completion will be the business meeting in August, 2020. A final drawing will be held at the business meeting. (This leaves you plenty of time to still get your other show items finished.) If you don’t enter your item in the main show, let us display them in the Education booth.

In addition, bring bring your tips for quilting 3-R’s to guild to share with others - look for cards or a poster on which to write down your idea.
