Anchorage Log Cabin Quilters, Inc. : September 2017

At the guild's first meeting of each month, we honor those members who have birthdays with cake and the birthday song. We also ask them to give a quilting tip. Pat told us that she and her husband were celebrating the 59th anniversary on the 7th, and she shared this rule of life: "Life by the yard is very hard. Life by the inch is a cinch." Those are valuable words to remember when events seem to overwhelm us.

Barbara recycled a challenge quilt from last year's retreat with felt pumpkins and a caribou from a Row by Row pattern to create this small quilt.

This small quilt and the stuffed elephant will be donated to the guild's Teddy Bear Tea service project.

Kate's "Flowers on Helium" uses the president's challenge fabric and the fabric weaving technique which Kate taught us.

Kate used orphan blocks in a class taught by Maria Shell to create "Kitchen Sink".

Katy quilted this beautiful, state fair blue-ribbon winning quilt for her sister. The wedges are paper-pieced.

When left-handed Linda developed a hand injury, she taught herself to needle turn with her right hand and created this colorful quilt.

Marilyn showed the label on the back of the quilt below. It is signed by nationally known teachers from the Sisters Quilt Show.

Marilyn made this quilt in a class at the Sisters Quilt Show in Oregon. She used Tula Pink fabric.

Mary embellished this cute little quilt with a hand knitted swatch. She plans to donate it to the Small Quilt Auction next year.

Irene coordinates the guild donations to the Spiritual Care Center at Providence Hospital for terminal patients and their families. Barbara created this interesting quilt and the one below using blocks she won at May's guild retreat. Finding a way to put such varied blocks together was a challenge.

Rena was so excited about finding this cute cat quilt at a garage sale that she couldn't stand still long enough for the photographer to take a clear photo.

Robyn will donate this small quilt to one of the fund raisers to be held at JBER (Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson).

Ruth created this whole cloth quilt using wax-based crayons. She then machine-quilted it.

The center of this small quilt is hand-embroidered and is bordered with found fabric.

Ruthe made "Is It Christmas Yet?" after the class in fabric weaving. The not-quite a Christmas trees has charms hanging from its branches.

The Calendar Girls small group has a challenge every year in which small quilts are made to fit a theme. Photographs of these quilts are then used to produce a calendar, which the group members give as gifts to friends and family. The theme for the 2018 calendar was Music.
