January 19 Program and Show and Tell

President Barbara opened the program while dressed for the winter weather. The Alaska quilters who came to the meeting when the temperature was -10 degrees Fahrenheit were hardy people.

Mixed media artist and retired high school art teacher Linda Lucky presented a program about the elements and principles of design. She recommended that quilters study the design of the Gee's Bend quilts. After the lecture, members had an opportunity to practice the elements of design with colored paper.

Linda's lecture about design included tips about using the color wheel.

After the program and refreshments, members gathered for show and tell.

Kate showed her portable design wall created using batting and the blue tarp which was last year's president's challenge fabric.

Charter member Doris told about the guild's beginning and about an early class with nationally known quilter, Michael James.

Doris showed her hand pieced, appliquéd and quilted puzzle quilt which was inspired by a calendar.

Jeanette's Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt is almost finished after working on it for 5-6 years.

Jeanette had challenges with the hand-sewn facing. She hand quilted around the English paper-pieced flowers.

This quilt and the following ones by Linda were created from men's shirts as donations to the Salvation Army's Transformed Treasures fund raising auction. Artists using a variety of media will get items from the Salvation Army's thrift store and repurpose them.

Rena showed an art quilt created by Deb from a UFO started by former member Carol.

This art quilt by Deb, shown here by Rena, has dichroic glass cabochons fastened by crochet stitches, as well as, hand colored fabric. These will be on display at the guild's Celebration of Quilts at Doriola's Restaurant in March.

Barbara showed this baby quilt.

Barbara created Teddy Bear quilts for the guild's stuffed animal and quilt service project.

Rosemary showed this comfort quilt pieced.

This comfort quilt was pieced by Darlene and quilted by Katy. The photo above shows the quilt back with Katy's intricate quilting.

January 5 Show and Tell

The quilts above were completed by guild members for our Comfort Quilts service project.

During our business meeting, Glenda explained the next steps for adding a border to the Round Robin quilt challenge in which some members are participating. This step will be included in the next newsletter. Glenda showed some of the Round Robins which she has been making.

During Show and Tell after the business meeting and birthday cake, we saw that several guild members have been very busy.

Barbara made this Teddy Bear quilt from left-over fabrics.

Gail's cute Paddington Bear will go to a new home with its own special quilt as part of the Teddy Bear Quilt service project.

Glenda tried a technique she saw on the Missouri Star Quilts web site.

Since Glenda still had orange fabric left from the butterfly quilt, she made another one for this tiger. The quilt and tiger will go to the Teddy Bear Quilt service project.

Pat created this quilt from block patterns purchased at a local quilt shop's Buck a Block promotion. She is donating it to Comfort Quilts.

Ruthe was especially busy lately, finishing a number of UFO's to clean out her quilt stash.

Shirley made several pretty wall-hangings and repurposed some blocks.

Shirley added appliqué to this tea towel.

Joan made this Christmas quilt from rescued quilt blocks.
